A Custom 3D-Printed Cup Holder for the IKEA Nämmarö Chair
The IKEA NÄMMARÖ outdoor furniture series is fantastic for its modularity and style, but it’s missing one critical accessory: a convenient place to put your drink. Resting a glass on the wide, slatted armrest is a recipe for spills.
To solve this, I designed a simple, robust, and custom-fit cup holder specifically for the IKEA NÄMMARÖ chair. It slides on securely and provides a stable holder for cups, cans, or bottles, making an already great chair even better.
Key Features
- Custom-Fit Design: This isn’t a generic, one-size-fits-all solution [1]. It is precisely modeled to match the unique profile of the NÄMMARÖ armrest for a seamless, stable fit that looks like it belongs there.
- Tool-Free Installation: The design features a two-part, print-in-place assembly with a clever locking key. Simply slide the holder onto the armrest and insert the key to lock it firmly in place. No screws, no glue, and no damage to your furniture.
- Durable and Weather-Resistant: Designed to live outdoors, this model is best printed in materials like PETG or ASA, which offer excellent UV and temperature resistance, ensuring the cup holder lasts for many seasons.
Printing and Assembly
The model is optimized for an easy and reliable 3D printing experience.
- Recommended Material: PETG or ASA for outdoor durability. PLA can be used for indoor applications or short-term outdoor use but may warp in direct sun or high heat.
- Print Settings: No supports are required. I recommend a 0.2mm layer height and at least 15% infill for a strong part.
- Assembly: After printing, simply work the locking key back and forth a few times to free it up. Slide the main body onto the chair’s armrest, then push the key in to secure it.
